What would you wish you had with you if you were stranded or had an emergency?
We seldom carry the same combination of gear twice, depending on the conditions
of a given hike
Return to the pack anything not in use - if a bear approaches, you may need to grab
things up quickly
Waterproof anything that can't survive a rain shower (Ziploc bags are a blessing)
Day pack
Sturdy footwear
Layered clothing (mountain conditions can change quickly)
Hiking staff
Whistle
Rain gear
Food, water, water purification tablets (bring more food than you expect to use)
Flashlight
Map and compass
Insect repellant
Sunglasses
Toilet paper
Small trowel (to dig toilet hole)
Cigarette lighter (burning toilet paper makes it easier to bury)
Paper and pens (bring a spare pen, in case one goes dry)
Hand sanitizer
Ground cloth, seat pad
Parachute cord
Personal medications
Emergency kit (see separate list)
This gear list reflects what we personally carry. Other equally experienced hikers might have items to add or subtract from their lists. Ultimately, you will find what works for you. We make no claim as to the completeness of this list, nor is it intended to substitute for adequate skill training.
